The Roman Amphitheater
Which is located in the heart of the Jordanian capital, Amman, and built about 1800 years ago, is one of the greatest Roman monuments in the Levant region.

An Evidence for the Existence of Civilizations in Jordan

In front of the amphitheater there was a vast dirt plaza called the “Maidan”, where Amman’s people and visitors used to meet during religious holidays, national occasions, and traditional annual festivals.
Some references refer to several names for the amphitheater, including: “Roman Theatre”, “Pharaoh’s Staircase”, “Roman Stadium” and “Suliman Stadium”, which is located at the foot of Jabal Al-Joufeh, and was built in commemoration of Emperor Madrian’s visit to Amman “Philadelphia, second century AD.” The amphitheater was built between 138 and 161 AD, during the reign of Caesar Antoninus Pius, with a capacity of 6,000 spectators.
However, this amphitheater - the architectural masterpiece - has a characteristic that largely determines its uses. The semi-circular building is elaborate in dimensions and heights, which makes the sound system in it of high quality, and it seems that there is a certain point in the middle of the stage, as once the singer or musician stands at it, To be audible to all spectators in purity and clarity.

For this reason, the Roman amphitheater became a stage for song, melody, music and a wonderful sound. This Roman amphitheater is considered the largest in the Jordan.
What distinguishes the Roman amphitheater is its resistance through time, as if it is still as it was built about 1800 years ago, and this is due in part to the good restoration operations, which it has been subjected to, Its condition today still allows it to be used in several cultural and artistic activities, in which artistic performances are held, and there are also two museums, namely: The Museum of Folklife, located in the western section of the amphitheater, and was established in 1975, and includes exhibits representing Jordanian life in the diversity of its cultures, as well as the Folk Museum. For jewelry and fashion, and was established in 1971, with the aim of collecting and preserving heritage for future generations.
