Also known as the Zarqa River or the Crocodile River , is the second largest tributary of the Jordan River after the Yarmouk River , and it is the third largest river in the region in terms of annual drainage. The average annual discharge of this river in the Deir Alla region is 83 million cubic meters, of which approximately 38 million cubic meters is the amount of basic (permanent flow) discharge. A length of 70 km and varies in width from 7 to 10 meters, and an area of about 3,400 hip km 2 . It stems from the Jordanian capital, Amman, heading east through Ain Ghazal , Rusaifeh , and the city of Zarqa , where it bends 180 degrees and begins its run towards the Jordan Valley crossing Jerash, Ajloun , and Balqa , and it eventually flows into Lake Jerash .
Geologists have estimated that the age of the river is about 30 million years, as it was discovered in the effects of Ain Ghazal, which were discovered in the seventies and eighties of the twentieth century , where statues were unearthed from the Neolithic period, which were made about six thousand years BC. Archaeological finds along the riverbed indicate that the area was rich in flora and fauna in the past and dates back to the Lower Cretaceous Period (135 million years ago).
Yaqut al-Hamwi said about him : “A great river, abundant with water, and in it many sevens are mentioned with ferocity, and around it there are many wrapped plants and reed trees.” People still remember the fish market that was built next to the "torrent" in Amman , where fishermen used to bring what they caught from the Zarqa River to that market to sell. The ford area is important to the Biblical people, as it is considered a sacred area for them.
In the past three decades, the Zarqa River has been subjected to major attacks by some factories, turning its pure water into wastewater , in addition to the presence of a large number of wastewater outlets that flow into it without serious supervision by successive governments; After the establishment of a Ministry of Environment in Jordan, he began to take an interest in the Zarqa River to restore life
